Fall 2017 Parking & Transportation Update

Dear Students:

We are excited for the start of the Fall 2017 semester! With the beginning of a new academic year, comes an opportunity to unveil some exciting changes to EKU Parking & Transportation Services. We want to help you be informed about these changes to help guide your parking decisions for the upcoming year. As always, we can be reached at (859) 622-PARK (7275) or via email at

The first change we want to make you aware of is that Parking & Transportation Services is now part of the EKU Division of Public Safety. This move allows us to strategically and safely manage parking and vehicular flow during your experience on campus. It is important to note that frustrations occur when motorists do not allow enough time to park, or to utilize the Big E Transit Service, to get to their final on-campus destination. We encourage you to make use of exterior parking lots and Big E transit services whenever possible.

Enforcement Begins First Day of Classes

A change this year will include enforcement of parking zone restrictions on the first day of classes. There is no grace period as this has led to significant frustrations by individuals who need to park in the appropriate zones.

Big E Transit Service

You can now see in real-time where Big E Transit buses are on campus routes to plan arrival times. Download the Big E Transit - “DoubleMap” app TODAY on the App Store or Google Play and choose “Big E Transit” from the system list.

Big E Transit currently offers six (6) transit routes to service the needs of the campus community including popular campus routes Monday-Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and evening routes Sunday through Thursday from 6:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. We have also added Saturday and Sunday routes from 11:00 AM until 7:00 p.m. that includes stops at Meijer, Wal-Mart and select campus locations. Please refer to the website for the most up to date version of the schedule. To print or save the full schedule of the most current Big E Transit routes visit The Big E Transit services are continually being evaluated and refined to best serve you. Please visit the route schedule prior to the start of classes to stay up to date.

Park Drive Closure

Park Drive is now closed to thru traffic. Please make plans to adjust your travel. There has also been the addition of a 3-way stop at the intersection of Kit Carson Drive and Park Drive to replace the traffic light.

New Parking for Commuters and Employees

We have added 121 street-side parallel parking spaces to south Kit Carson Drive (south of the Eastern Bypass) for commuters and employees. The parking garage is expected to be ready on or about September 5, 2017. This will add 325 spaces. The first floor will be dedicated to “park and pay” parking, while floors 2-4 will be dedicated to employees and commuters. The new University Lot (corner of University Street and Summit Street) will add an additional 74 spaces of commuter parking.

Commuter Parking

Commuter parking will change slightly this year. The Summit Lot has been designated as a residential lot and will no longer be available to commuters. The Carter Lot has changed from general use to a commuter lot. The following lots are available to commuters:

• Alumni Coliseum (except for employee portion)

• Brockton Commuter Lot

• Business and Technology Lot (shared use)

• Carter Lot (new to commuters)

• Center for the Arts (shared use)

• John Hanlon Lot

• Kit Carson Drive (south of the Bypass, shared use, new)

• Parking Garage (shared use, new)

• Stratton Lot (shared use)

• University Drive (past Crabbe Street)

• University Lot (new)

• Van Hoose Lot

The Z-Zone (Park and Ride) Lots are available to commuters in the event of an overflow situation.

Freshman Parking

On-campus resident freshmen residential students will be required to park in the Z-Lot (Park and Ride). These lots are located on-campus south of the Eastern Bypass. Currently, these lots include Vickers Lot, Ashland Lot, and the Lower Perkins Lot. Keep an active eye on the most current parking map for changes and updates.

Residential Parking

Several parking lots have changed their designation to upper-class residential only parking. Upper-class residential lots include:

• Brockton Lot

• Burnam Lot

• Clay Hall on Kit Carson

• Commonwealth Lot (before employee section)

• Grand Campus Lot

• Keene Lot

• Kit Carson Lot

• Lancaster Lot (past employee section)

• Madison Avenue Street Side

• Madison Lot

• Summit Lot

• Telford Lot

• Walters Lot

Immediate Tow

Your safety as you drive and park on campus is our top priority. Unfortunately, some choose to park in fire lanes and right-of-way in roads and parking lots. To facilitate safe travel and allow access for emergency vehicles, fire lanes and right-of-way pathways in parking lots and on roadways will be strictly enforced 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, with an immediate tow.

Out of respect for individuals with accessibility needs, we will also immediately tow anyone who chooses to park in an accessible space without a valid and current EKU accessible parking permit.

How to Register for your Permit

Everyone parking on the EKU campus must have a parking permit. Parking permits cost $100 and are valid for the Academic Year. The fee is charged to your student account and may be paid at Student Accounting Services, Room 210 in the Whitlock Building.

To obtain your parking permit:

1. Log onto EKU Direct

2. On the main menu, click on the “Vehicle Registration” option.

3. Select the correct permit type from the drop-down menu and click "Continue".

4. Select your primary vehicle from the “Registered Vehicles” list and click “Purchase Permit”.

5. If your vehicle is not listed, scroll down to “Add a Vehicle”. Enter your vehicle information and click on “Add Vehicle”. The next screen will now have the “Select a Vehicle”. Click on your vehicle and click on “Purchase Permit”. Click “OK”. Please verify that all vehicle information is correct.

6. The confirmation page will verify that you have purchased a permit. However, this confirmation page is NOT a parking permit and should not be displayed in your vehicle.

Commuter Permits must be picked up in the Parking Office. If you are living in a Residence Hall and register your vehicle by August 8, 2017, your permit will be at your Residence Hall on move-in day. If you do not register by August 8, 2017 you will need to pick up your permit in the Parking Office located on the 2nd floor in the Commonwealth Building.

Again, we desire for you to have a successful parking experience while on campus. We encourage you to become familiar with the most current version of the parking map which can be found at Following posted zone restrictions at each lot and parking area will help you avoid receiving a parking ticket while on campus. Our Parking Control Officers are professional and diligent about enforcing parking regulations to promote safety and service the needs of those who park in the appropriate zones on campus.

We look forward to serving you this coming year. See you soon.
